Born in New York City on June 18, 1902, Rodgers studied at Columbia University where he met the lyricist, Lorenz Hart. In the 1920s and 1930s, Rodgers & Hart produced numerous successful musical comedies, including: The Garrick Gaieties (1925-26), Dearest Enemy (1925), A Connecticut Yankee (1927), On Your Toes (1936), Babes in Arms (1937), I'd Rather Be Right (1937), I Married an Angel (1938), The Boys From Syracuse (1938), Too Many Girls (1939), Higher and

A look at 9 significant shows on Broadway (Miami Herald)
This was the season when sure-fire Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick flunked their chemistry test in The Odd Couple. When the vampires of Lestat bit the dust and Tarzan stayed earthbound, despite all the actors swinging on ''vines.'' When Julia Roberts proved that movie stardom doesn't give an actor a free pass on Broadway.
Howard Kissel: My top 10
As the Broadway community converged on Radio City Music Hall for the 59th annual Antoinette Perry Awards, they could look back on a season notable for producing a higher-than-average number of serious plays.
With the perennial laments about the death of serious theater, it seems worth noting that there were enough candidates to fill the Tony Best Play Revival category but only three shows to fill the comparable musicals category.
The season had plenty of memorable moments that will stay with me, whether or not they win awards:
1.
Opera Theater of St. Louis: Mixing musical styles (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Composer Kurt Weill subtitled his "Street Scene" "An American Opera." The show's original Broadway producers called it a dramatic musical. Subsequent presenters have called it problematic.
Tuneful Tonys: Broadway delivers an earful to critics who say the musical is dead (Miami Herald)
Of the four shows vying for the coveted, box office-boosting best musical honor at tonight's 60th annual Tony Awards, only one -- The Drowsy Chaperone -- is wholly original in its story, script and score.
