About Broadway
The sung lyrics of a musical are referred to as its libretto (originally an opera term); the music itself is the score; and the combination of the spoken dialogue and the sung libretto is often referred to as the book of the musical. The annual Tony Awards recognize some of the most successful new shows and revivals each year. Book musicals have gone by many names: comic operas, operettas, opera bouffe, burlesque, burletta, extravaganza, musical comedy, etc.

A look at 9 significant shows on Broadway (Miami Herald)
This was the season when sure-fire Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick flunked their chemistry test in The Odd Couple. When the vampires of Lestat bit the dust and Tarzan stayed earthbound, despite all the actors swinging on ''vines.'' When Julia Roberts proved that movie stardom doesn't give an actor a free pass on Broadway.

Howard Kissel: My top 10
As the Broadway community converged on Radio City Music Hall for the 59th annual Antoinette Perry Awards, they could look back on a season notable for producing a higher-than-average number of serious plays. With the perennial laments about the death of serious theater, it seems worth noting that there were enough candidates to fill the Tony Best Play Revival category but only three shows to fill the comparable musicals category. The season had plenty of memorable moments that will stay with me, whether or not they win awards: 1.

Opera Theater of St. Louis: Mixing musical styles (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
